The Gulf Islands International Education Program is located on scenic Salt Spring Island, the largest of Canada’s famous Gulf Islands. This island community enjoys an ideal location. It is only 30 minutes from the provincial capital city of Victoria, yet enjoys the natural beauty of the West Coast of Canada. Well known as a highly educated, creative and professional community, Salt Spring Island also enjoys a reputation for being one of the most desirable places in Canada to live with more sunshine and warmer temperatures year round than any other place in British Columbia.
Although part of the charm of living on the Gulf Islands is being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the residents of Salt Spring Island enjoy a fast and efficient ferry service to Vancouver, Victoria and Vancouver Island. British Columbia Ferries (www.bcferries.ca) have numerous sailings to these destinations every day.
Salt Spring Island is well known in North America as a center of the arts. Many of Canada’s top writers, performing artists and visual artists choose to make Salt Spring Island their home. Salt Spring Island is also a very professional community and an ideal place to raise a family. The low crime rates and sense of community foster a sense of belonging and security.
The island is peppered with artist studios and small family farms, which give the impression of quiet solitude, but the village of Ganges comes alive on the weekends and especially during the summer when thousands of tourists and the locals like to mix at the sidewalk cafes and galleries or at the famous Saturday market. Kayakers and yachts compete for space in Ganges Harbour and the roads are full of cyclists who come from the cities to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.
Many of our international students come from very large cities, yet the island quickly becomes their Canadian home, a place that they will never forget.
