Gulf Islands Secondary School
The award winning Gulf Islands Secondary School, which was opened in 1994, boasts a reputation for academic achievement; winning sports teams; outstanding performing and visual art programs, including the Advanced Placement Studio Art and the Gulf Islands School of the Performing Arts programs; and exceptional computer technology programs, including computer animation, media arts, computer programming and computer assisted drafting.
The mission statement for the school, “dedicated to the advancement of learning and social responsibility” which described the school in 1994 is even more poignant today as the staff and students explore what it means to pursue personalized learning for the 21st Century.

More about personalized learning.
Gulf Islands Secondary School serves the needs of a diverse population of students. Because it is a comprehensive school some students pursue academic studies, while other students choose to enrol in vocational programs.
According to a recent study, about 80% of Gulf Island’s graduates pursue an academic program while in high school, while the rest of the students enrol in vocational or career preparation programs. While the majority of the students pursue an academic program, given the creative nature of the community and the school, some of these students tend to focus on the performing, visual and media arts programs.
